Los Angeles to Aspen

Leave the Valley after breakfast and be on Aspen Mountain by early afternoon. The flight from Van Nuys takes about two hours in a light jet, and the altitude at the Aspen end shapes the choice of aircraft more than the distance does.

From Van Nuys (VNY)

Van Nuys Airport

  • Also: Hollywood Burbank/Bob Hope Airport (BUR)

To Aspen (ASE)

Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field)

  • Also: Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE)
  • Van Nuys (VNY) is the closer start for the Westside and the Valley. Burbank (BUR) is easier to reach from Pasadena and Glendale.
  • Aspen’s runway sits at about 7,800 feet, where thin air cuts takeoff performance, so the operator works out what the aircraft can carry for your exact passengers and bags before you fly.
  • In July and August, afternoon heat cuts that performance further, and flights back to Los Angeles are best planned for the morning.
  • If winter weather closes Aspen, Eagle County (EGE) is the backup, about 70 miles by road. Christmas, New Year’s, and Presidents’ Day are the peak weeks.
