Scottsdale
Arizona
For a winter golf trip, Scottsdale Airport (SDL) lands you close to the resorts and the north Scottsdale courses, about 20 minutes from Old Town. The largest jets and the big event weeks send some trips to Phoenix instead.
Airports.
- SDLScottsdale Airport, about nine miles north of Old Town, with an 8,249-foot runway
- DVTPhoenix Deer Valley, northwest of Scottsdale, useful when SDL is full
- PHXPhoenix Sky Harbor, for aircraft too large for Scottsdale
The wingspan limit
Scottsdale Airport has an 8,249-foot runway, but aircraft with wingspans over 100 feet aren’t allowed, so the very largest jets use Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). A voluntary quiet period runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Barrett-Jackson and the Phoenix Open
Business jets crowd Scottsdale Airport for Barrett-Jackson’s car auction in late January and the WM Phoenix Open in early February, and spring training follows from late February through March. If your dates point to a full ramp, we’ll say so early; Phoenix Deer Valley (DVT), northwest of town, is the next choice.
June to August
Summer highs regularly pass 100 degrees, and golf goes quiet. Hot afternoons also cut into aircraft performance, which can shape both the departure time and the load.
