High summer at MVY
Martha’s Vineyard Airport (MVY) has a main runway of about 5,500 feet with an instrument approach. July and August are the busy months, and late June and September are a little quieter.
Friday nights and quiet hours
For a summer Friday after work, we’ll time the departure around the quiet hours. In season the tower runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the airport asks pilots not to land or take off between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
When fog holds the island
Morning fog sometimes holds flights across the Cape and islands, and holiday weekends have seen long delays. If it doesn’t lift, the flight can land at Hyannis (HYA) instead, and the ferry from Woods Hole reaches Vineyard Haven in about 45 minutes.
