Lake Tahoe
California and Nevada
Fly into Truckee for the north shore or into Lake Tahoe Airport for South Lake Tahoe, and the drive from the runway is short. Reno-Tahoe has the long runways for anything the lake airports can’t take.
Airports.
- TRKTruckee Tahoe, about two miles east of Truckee, the closer field for the north shore
- TVLLake Tahoe Airport, about three miles from South Lake Tahoe, with strict noise limits
- RNOReno-Tahoe International, about 45 minutes to the north shore and just over an hour to the south
North shore or south
Truckee Tahoe (TRK) is the closer field for Truckee and the north shore. Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL) is about three miles from South Lake Tahoe. Reno-Tahoe (RNO) is about 45 minutes from the north shore and a little over an hour from the south.
Noise limits at the lake
We’ll confirm the aircraft meets the noise rules at whichever lake airport you use. Lake Tahoe Airport sets a decibel limit on every takeoff and landing, with a lower one at night, and Truckee asks aircraft not to fly between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Summer heat and winter ice
On summer afternoons, density altitude at Truckee often tops 9,000 feet, which cuts aircraft performance, so morning departures are easier. Truckee doesn’t offer de-icing, so on icy winter days the flight goes to Reno.
